Mullein Torch

Mullein, when dipped in wax, works particularly well as a torch. The resulting flame is bright and big. I’m always thrilled by how surprisingly bright the flames get.  Each inch of a wax-covered stalk accounts for about 10 minutes of burning. 

The ancient Romans dipped the dried stalks of mullein, gathered in fall or winter, into animal fat and burned them as torches for the funeral processions that carried the dead out of the city. You can learn more here about the history of mullein torches and how to make them.

Each torch is unique, between 6-8 inches. The beeswax is from a local family-owned farm and is colored to be a slightly richer tone with turmeric.
